Gerome: 70 Artworks (Annotated)
Opis:
Jean-Léon Gérôme (Born 11 May 1824 in Vesoul, Département Haute-Saône; Died 10 January 1904 in Paris) was a French historical painter and sculptor. Gérôme's work can be ascribed to academic realism. One of his typical paintings is Pollice Verso from 1872, which is considered one of the most outstanding works on gladiators and the image that has shaped today's ideas about gladiatorial fights. Gérôme had carried out extensive research and studied intensively armor excavated in Pompeii, so his painting is based on the state of research at the time. Although the combination of the armor is not correct according to the current state of knowledge, Pollice verso accurately depicts the atmosphere of the decisive moment: under the light filtered by the awning, an excited crowd judged the death sentence on the defeated fighter. Even the vestal virgins dressed in white, who always attended the gladiatorial fight, which is considered an act of state, are tempted to make the deadly gesture, which, however, is not documented in Roman times as a downward-pointing thumb. Both the awning and the privileged seat of the vestal virgins are, however, historically documented. In the 1880s, Gérôme took an interest in animalism, and he began painting predators - leopards, lions, and tigers. One of the most remarkable paintings in this genre is "The Two Majesties", which depicts a lion looking at the Sun. French researchers (Hélène Lafont Couturier in particular) claimed that the "Austerlitz Sun" was hinted at here: the artist thus wanted to express his sadness and nostalgia for the majesty of the Second Empire. In general, this painting conveys an atmosphere of longing and loneliness, which is somewhat offset by the pink tones of the rising sun.In 1895, Jerome was invited to participate in an illustrated edition of the Bible, which involved 22 academicians of the time, including Alma-Tadema, Burne-Jones, Tisso, Puvis de Chavannes, I. Repin, and many others. Jerome made eight perfectly classic illustrations in terms of style and plot, the location of five of which is unknown. The pinnacle of the artist's academic career was his elevation to the rank of a Great officer of the Legion of Honour.
