Giovan Battista Moroni (Albino, 1522 - 5 February 1578/1579) was an Italian painter.Moroni, trained at the Moretto, from whom he took up the severely devotional style in paintings of religious subjects, became famous above all for his work as a portraitist, producing paintings that can be defined as "portraits in action", depicting characters at the moment they are making a gesture, in such a way to avoid the arid fixity of the official portrait.Moroni's life can largely be reconstructed only through his paintings, as the written sources are meager. Besides commissions for noble families from Bergamo, he also received commissions from monasteries and churches. These were always oil paintings and not frescos. Many of his weaker works in his style indicate a very active teaching activity by him. A student of his, Giovanni Battista Moneta, signs his paintings with the same signature GBM. Many of these paintings are therefore attributed to Moroni. Moroni's last work was a painting of the Last Judgement for the church in Gorlago. Moroni died on 5 February 1578 without completing this painting. Apparently, an assistant finished the painting so badly that it was said that "in Gorlago it is better in hell than in heaven".In general, his style is influenced by his mentor, Lorenzo Lotto, and Jerónimo Savoldo. Moroni did not have any outstanding pupils, but it is said that his perceptive portrait technique influenced artists of later generations such as Fra' Galgario and Pietro Longhi.
